Your new intern has amnesia

Imagine you just hired someone brilliant. Excellent credentials and great work experience. His name is Claude.

But there’s a catch. He has a unique type of amnesia. He remembers things about the world but he forgets every interaction he has with you.

Every time you interact with him, you have to hand him a book containing every word you’ve ever said to each other. He reads it before he can answer your next question. Every single time.

You ask something. He answers. You ask another question. He goes back to page one. By your tenth question, the book is enormous and re-reading it costs time and energy.

This is Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and every AI chatbot you’ve ever used. They are stateless and have no inherent memory. This leads to the two main frustrations that people have with Claude -forgetting the original context of a conversation and constantly hitting your usage limits.

1. Claude forgets things (the context window)

The book has a maximum page count. That limit is called the context window. As your conversation grows, the book gets thicker. Eventually it hits the limit. When that happens, Claude has to drop the earliest pages to make room for new ones.

The problem: the first pages are usually the most important. That’s where you explained what you’re working on, what tone you want, what you’ve already decided. Once those fall out, Claude loses the thread. This is why, in long conversations, Claude becomes increasingly ‘forgetful’. And why you will also encounter the second issue.

2. Usage limits (the printing cost)

This one trips people up. You send a five word message to Claude and hit your limit. How? Because any message means Claude re-reads everything before it. If your conversation is 50 pages long, a one-line question costs the same as printing all 50 pages. Longer conversations burn through your allowance faster, regardless of how short your latest message is.

A partial fix

Most AI chatbots now have a built-in memory feature to help with this. It is not true memory. It works by saving snippets from your past conversations and injecting them into future ones automatically. It helps, but it won’t catch everything - which is why the manual workarounds below still matter. Claude’s memory feature is covered in the next section.

What to do about it

  1. One task, one chat. Don’t use the same conversation for two different topics. When you move to something new, open a new chat. It costs almost nothing and keeps the book thin.
  2. Keep chats short. When a project gets complex and the conversation is getting long, ask Claude to summarize the conversation and paste it into a new chat.

There is a workaround for this covered in the Skills section.

  1. Be direct. Stream-of-consciousness prompts make the book thicker faster. Say what you need. Fewer words means slower burn.
