The Return

People don't stop because they lack intent. They pause because life changes. Work gets busy. Motivation fades. Priorities shift. What stood out through the research wasn't the interruption itself, but what happened afterwards: people reflected, adapted, and eventually found their own way back.

Design an experience that supports the moment of return, not by asking users to recover what they lost, but by helping them meaningfully engage in what comes next.

Returning shouldn't feel like catching up. It should feel like continuing.

The app should become a mirror that reminds people how far they've come, not how much they missed.

Instead of measuring success through uninterrupted streaks, explore how an experience can make returning feel natural, personal, and worth celebrating.

Product Scope

While the original challenge suggested designing for a single habit, I intentionally expanded the scope to support multiple habits.

Returning is not unique to one area of life. Whether someone is exercising, reading, journaling, practising music, cooking or learning a new skill, the emotional experience of pausing and beginning again remains remarkably similar.

Rather than designing a solution around one specific habit, I wanted to design for the behaviour itself, the act of returning. This allowed the experience to support the many habits people naturally move between as their routines, priorities and seasons of life change.

The goal wasn't to build another habit tracker for a particular activity, but to create a single, compassionate space that welcomes people back to whatever they're returning to.

North Star Metric

Percentage of users who feel comfortable returning after a break and continuing their habit-building journey.

Why this metric?

This metric reflects the core philosophy behind Yours. Rather than measuring perfect consistency or uninterrupted streaks, it focuses on whether the experience helps people return without guilt and continue building habits in a way that feels personal, kind and sustainable.

The metric is evaluated across four dimensions:
