Assessment

Charles MacLean, Understanding Scotch Malt Whisky, third edition (The Council of Whiskey Masters, 2026), 98 supplied PDF sheets. Photography and preface: Hans Offringa; foreword: Jörn Kleinhans. Reader references below use visually checked printed page numbers. The Complete coverage inventory and Visual evidence discussion retain explicitly labeled internal PDF-sheet coordinates for preservation accounting.

This edition is a broad practitioner-led teaching synthesis, not a peer-reviewed research monograph. Preserve the Understanding Scotch Malt Whisky — Full-Source Literature Note and its original locators; this is a separate edition, not a replacement. This note contains analysis only; the source PDF remains in the private Sources database.

Complete coverage

All 98 sheets reviewed textually; image-only sheets 7, 22, 56, 59, 78, 89, 91 and 98 visually inspected. Sheet 59's map also examined at higher resolution. This does not imply independent corroboration of every source claim or a line-by-line comparison against the 2020 edition.

Useful ideas, carefully bounded

  1. Regions guide exploration; they do not determine flavor. p. 58 expressly qualifies regional generalizations because production choices and cask history change the result. Use geography for orientation, then describe the actual sample.
  2. Define the tasting question first. pp. 82–83 distinguish analytical description from personal pleasure. For blending trials, record profile and faults separately from liking and price expectations.
