Data is seen everywhere , and its shown in multiple different ways:

Visualisations of data can reveal or hide specific pieces of data. Depending on how data is shown and displayed it can make it seem more impressive or substantial - You can also highlight different pieces of information.

I decided that from the 5 prompts I wanted to create my dashboard focusing around the city or the environment.

David McCandless

Information is Beautiful

I got David McCandless book “Beautiful News” to look at for inspiration for how to display different types of data as when I began planning for the dashboard I struggled coming up with different ideas to display data that weren't just simple charts and diagrams.

Edward Tufte

The Visial Display of Quantitative Information

Graphical Excellence

In Tufte’s book , “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information” he says that a good graphical display of data should present, “complex ideas with clarity, precision and efficiency”, he states that a good graphical display should be these 7 things:

  1. show the data
  2. induce the viewer to think about the substance rather than about methodology, graphic design, the technology of graphic pro- duction, or something else
  3. avoid distorting what the data have to say
  4. present many numbers in a small space
  5. make large data sets coherent
  6. encourage the eye to compare different pieces of data serve a reasonably clear purpose: description, exploration, tabulation, or decoration
  7. be closely integrated with the statistical and verbal descriptions of a data set
