Meeting: Wednesday, August 19, 2026 · 12:00–1:00 PM ET
Facilitator: Saleem Abdulrasool
Audience: BCNY, Apple engineers, external community (open to all)
Forum: Swift Forums — Windows
1. Welcome & Agenda (~2 min)
- Kelly intro to the group
- Meeting structure
- Agendas moving forward will be email to the group + posted in forum beforehand
2. Open Forum: Community Issues (~10 min)
- **Crash Backtracer** — Karl:
swift-backtrace should launch for crash reporting in his Windows GUI app, but it appears to fail to start
- Group recommended to install the Sysinternals tools and use ProcMon to log system calls to see what backtracer is doing
- Swift concurrency — Daniel: does not map cleanly to Windows threading, so his team worked around it with a custom actor using a run loop
- Group recommended to avoid the old Core Foundation path and use DispatchIO instead
- Izzy— ICU making SoW binaries much bigger than expected, especially for static builds
- Group recommended to avoid
FoundationInternationalization when possible and use FoundationEssentials instead, perhaps trying a smaller ICU-style approach
- Build times — Mike: ~28 min clean Windows vs ~3 min Mac, mostly a large CPU-specialization pile in the video pipeline
- Timing-flag trace filed on GitHub Issues (cc Saleem) and on the project board?
- Ref for others hitting this: Windows Quick Start doc
- CAS — recommended to Mike for a ~20–30% build-time reduction (persistent cache, no remote)
- WASI on low-spec hardware — Terry blocked on storage on an i3 laptop; external drive suggested, WASI build is a one-time cost
- Izzy (Adobe) — https://github.com/swiftlang/swift/issues/89241
- Saleem merged fix — can this be closed out or is there anything else?
3. Follow-Up: Open Action Items from August 5 (~5 min)
- Carl — cross-post Charles's follow-ups (DS2 scheduling, SDK replica results, VS 2026 / swap-file) to his Slack channel
- Not posted yet. Charles OOO until Sept
- Carl — SPM-on-Windows prioritization with Dave Inglis
- Carl — status from Alastair on the DocC archive PR?
- First PR reviewed, waiting for updates to merge. Will have additional PRs
