What is Write A Friend?
Write a Friend began as the Senior Pen Pal Program, a community created to connect volunteers with older adults through meaningful letter writing. As the program grew, so did the interest. People of all ages began reaching out.
It quickly became clear that loneliness isn't limited by age. People from every stage of life are searching for genuine human connection.
Write A Friend is a pen pal program that pairs people of any age so they can connect through letters. It’s about slowing down and building real, meaningful friendships, one letter at a time.
Who can join?
Anyone! Write A Friend is open to people of all ages and backgrounds who want to connect with someone new through the written word.
Is it free to participate?
Yes — joining the program is completely free.
How am I matched with a pen pal?
When you sign up, you share a bit about yourself and your interests. We use that information to pair you with someone compatible.
Do I have to write by hand?
Not at all. You can send handwritten letters, typed letters, or even emails — whatever works best for you and your pen pal.
How often do I need to write?
There's no required schedule. You write at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Most pen pals aim for once or twice a month.
