Useful Techniques for Successful Lie _ Hye-joo Hwang

  1. Review of solo exhibition <LIARS> (2022, space Uooyoung, Seoul)

You are in a room you have never seen before. Here is a bed with a beige rose-patterned quilt and pillows, and matching it is a faded frame containing a peaceful landscape. This frame did not come into being because you captured it, nor did it appear for anyone; it is a pure ‘frame in itself (cadre en soi)’ that already existed. [Referencing Henri Bergson's ‘image en soi’.] We can speak of this frame thus: --1. An autumn landscape painting in an old frame. 2. A familiar mountain scene. 3. Simply, an inexpensive indoor accessory. -- Each person's appreciation is the sum of complex and contradictory tasks involving past and present, or painting and accessory. That is, the spontaneity of such results is a ‘good ambiguity’. [Cha Gun-hee. “Philosophical Reflections on Images.” Philosophical Studies 0.85 (2009). p.141.]

Choo Young-jin experiments with the conditions of ambiguity by adding everyday narratives to this ‘good ambiguity’. Originally, there were ‘complete’ 16 original stories, but these transform into various fragments that can be seen alongside visual images yet cannot be read. Located at the entrance of the exhibition space, <Two Statements>(2022) ambiguously completes the fragmented narrative using a movable trolley and binders. The meta-redefined story and its corresponding image are printed again as a complete pair for someone else. <LIARS>(2022), composed of fragmented text, is contained within the same frame as if it were a ‘complete’ text. This becomes a performance output through the voices of three performers. The artist poses a deeper question about the weight of narrative. When a single text is output in different ways, what is the weight of ambiguity? Fragmented output continues in <You See What I Read, You Read What I Saw>(2022). A single image is mixed into multi-point collage images, making it impossible to see or read it fully. Through this, Choo Youngjin reveals the ambiguous difference between ‘seeing’ and ‘reading’. Within this deliberate ambiguity, the final space's <Love and Anorexia: 15 Swallowed Dishes and Empty Belching> (2022) features a frame where images and price tags are intermingled. Neither image nor prop, the indistinguishable interior and exterior of the frame disrupts the audience's immersion. This prevents the work from being appreciated as an ‘image within the exhibition’. Within the deliberate ambiguity of the author, you were either completely deceived or not deceived at all. Our empirical fact—a solid pair of images and text—is doomed to failure. In the exhibition, images cannot be captured in a ‘perfect’ language, and language appears as a sensory outcome of a meta-perspective that does not manifest as a ‘perfect’ image. In other words, since speaking and writing cannot be perfect, we inevitably become liars striving to speak ‘truth’. The useful technique for successful lying lies in skillfully managing this ‘ambiguity’. Choo Young-jin seeks to research methods for successful lies about images and narratives by manipulating layers of ambiguity.
