Hi reader, I am Utkarsh Gupta. I am a 2024 graduate from IIT Bombay with a Dual Degree (BTech + MTech) in Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization in Thermals and Fluids. I worked for a couple of years at the Corning Research Center in India and Qualcomm Bangalore Design Center before moving to Purdue University for my PhD in MechE. My domain of interest is in applied heat transfer and data driven modeling.
This guide is my version of a dear diary to document my study abroad journey and the insights I gained while binge watching YouTube videos, skimming Reddit posts, and spending hours on “quick calls” with current and former graduate students.

First, I wanna thank me for believing in me and for doing all this hard work. A huge shoutout to Saukhya and Ameya for sharing their grad application guidebooks as a reference and for being so patient throughout my application process. A special mention to the LLMs like Copilot and the sources that they stole from, that corrected my text more brutally than my school English teacher. After all, I am not some long-lost relative of Shashi Tharoor.
