In June 2026, the Lee Han-yeol Memorial Hall organized a special exhibition titled “Such Prisoners of Conscience” for the second half of the year to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the June Democratic Uprising. Have you ever heard the term “prisoner of conscience”? Amnesty International defines a “prisoner of conscience” as someone who has been detained or imprisoned on the grounds of having exceeded the limits of institutional legal norms established by the state—even though they did not use or advocate violence—in the course of upholding their ethical, ideological, religious, or political beliefs. In the context of South Korea’s modern history during the 1980s, “prisoners of conscience” refer to political prisoners and pro-democracy activists who, refusing to compromise with the oppression of the military dictatorship, willingly chose imprisonment to defend the values of democracy, human rights, and labor rights. They were social activists and, at the same time, ordinary neighbors among us. University students who took to the streets amid tear gas to criticize the injustices of the dictatorship; industrial complex workers who formed unions to demand a dignified life and the three fundamental labor rights; young teachers who stood by their conscience to teach their students accurate history but were branded “pro-communist” and driven from the classroom; religious leaders, intellectuals, journalists, and families who took to the public squares calling for the release of those imprisoned—these were the true protagonists. This exhibition has been organized to shed light on the prisoners of conscience who, amid the massive tide of the June Democratic Uprising of 1987, endured the cold and solitude of narrow, dark 0.7 pyeong solitary confinement cells driven by their belief in democracy. We reflect on the lives and struggles of these prisoners of conscience, who were forced to wear the shackles of the National Security Law and serve prison terms simply for resisting the injustices of the dictatorial regime and participating in protests. Furthermore, we aim to confront the harsh reality of the brutal torture and human rights abuses they faced behind bars, as well as the passionate solidarity shown by the religious community and the families who took to the streets wearing purple headscarves to rescue them. We hope this will be an opportunity for us all to reflect on how the democracy and human rights we take for granted today were built upon the noble sacrifices of certain individuals.
