Almost all blood, body fluid, and tissue samples are sent to the laboratory for testing. Depending on the sample type and the source, it will be distributed to the corresponding department for appropriate testing. As an MLS Generalist, you are trained to run and analyze results for all, but not limited to, the departments listed. This is also a great way to understand what tests are done in each department.

Microbiology

โ Blood, Urine, Wound, Respiratory cultures

โ Parasitology & Mycology testing

If a patient has sepsis (bacterial in their blood system), 20mL - 40mL of blood is drawn in special bottles and sent to this department for Blood Cultures.

Urinalysis

โ Microscopic analysis for crystals, bacteria, WBCs, RBCs, Trichomonas

โ Analysis for renal conditions and diseases

โ Pregnancy tests, Drugs of Abuse testing, Toxicology

โ Coagulation and Body Fluid analysis

โ Complete Blood Counts, Clotting factor studies, Platelet studies

โ Gout, bone cancer, and hereditary blood conditions are detected in this department

Chemistry

โ Organ health and metabolic health are monitored by analyte testing

โ High volume โ€”> More automated machinery โ€”> More troubleshooting

โ Works with Operating Room when monitoring patientsโ€™ blood gases during surgery
