Feet, Line, Defender is a processing sequence used on perimeter shooting plays, especially when a defender is closing out hard or contesting a shot near the three-point line.

This sequence helps officials organize their vision in the correct order:

  1. Feet
  2. Line
  3. Defender

This concept keeps officials from skipping important steps. Many newer officials jump directly to the defender and miss either a travel or an incorrect two/three-point ruling. Perimeter plays often involve multiple decisions in a very short amount of time. This sequence helps officials stay organized and accurate.

Officiating focus:

Train your eyes to process the play in order. Don’t rush straight to the contact if you have not first identified the shooter’s feet and location.
