A trap occurs when:

• Two or more defenders converge on the ball handler
• The offensive player is restricted from passing, dribbling, or moving freely

Pressure situations increase:

• Turnover potential
• Potential for illegal contact
• Speed of play

These are high-risk moments for:

• Fouls
• Violations
• Missed calls

To officiate pressure and trap situations

• Identify where pressure is developing (backcourt or frontcourt)
• Focus on the on-ball defender(s)
• Watch for:
  • Hand checking that impedes RSBQ
  • Holding
  • Illegal contact restricting freedom of movement
