Project brief

Benchmark findings

Strom is an AI-powered neobank concept. It reduces financial overwhelm by taking work off people at three moments where banking apps create the most effort: a crowded home screen, forgotten subscriptions, and spending categories people stop trusting.

1. Context

Banking apps keep adding features: budgeting, subscriptions, investments, cashback, insurance, savings. Each one adds value on its own, but together they make the app harder to use. The few things people open it for get buried, recurring payments slip by, and spending insights are only as good as the categories behind them.

I focused on three problems instead of redesigning a whole bank.

2. Problem areas

Problem Evidence Solution
Feature overload makes simple tasks harder 77% of mobile banking users surveyed struggled with their apps, mostly with navigation and jargon Adaptive home: one insight at a time, quick actions ranked by use, an "Adapted to you" label, pin, reset and an off switch
Subscriptions get noticed too late 26% of UK adults signed up to a subscription by accident within a year (Citizens Advice) Pre-renewal decisions: flags only unused, duplicate or pricier services, 3 days before the charge, with keep, remind and cancel as equal choices
Wrong categories make insights unreliable 39% of payments got the wrong category from a typical engine in a test of 5 million transactions (MX benchmark, vendor-run) Explainable categories: asks when unsure, shows the reason and a confidence label, turns one correction into a visible rule

3. Design challenge

How might AI take work off people in their banking app, without taking control away from them?

Scope. In: home personalisation, subscriptions, categorisation. Out: full neobank redesign, investments, transfers, savings, onboarding and KYC, card management.

4. Design principles

  1. Reduce cognitive effort. Surface the relevant action when it is needed and keep the rest a step away.
  2. Support decisions as well as awareness. Help people decide what to do next, beyond telling them what happened.
  3. Learn from behaviour. Corrections, preferences and patterns should make the product better over time.
  4. Build trust through transparency. Every suggestion and label comes with a reason.
  5. Reduce manual effort. Repeated fixes and monitoring should decrease over time.
