• Traveling occurs when a player with possession of the ball moves their feet in excess of what the rules allow.
• The penalty for traveling is a loss of possession, and the ball is awarded to the opposing team.

Receiving the Ball While Standing Still

• A player who receives the ball while standing still may:
  • Pivot using either foot as the pivot foot.
• If the player starts a dribble:
  • The ball must be released from the hand before the pivot foot is lifted.

Gathering the Ball While Progressing

• A player who gathers the ball while moving may:
  • Take two steps to come to a stop, pass, or shoot.
  • If the player has not yet dribbled, they may take one step prior to releasing the ball.

Gathering While Dribbling

• A player who gathers the ball while dribbling may take two steps to stop, pass, or shoot.
• Step definitions:
  • First step: Occurs when one foot or both feet touch the floor after the gather.
  • Second step: Occurs when the other foot touches the floor or both feet touch simultaneously after the first step.

Stopping and Pivoting

• If a player stops on the first step with both feet on the floor simultaneously:
  • Either foot may be used as the pivot foot.
• If the player jumps off both feet:
  • The ball must be released before either foot returns to the floor.
• If a player lands with one foot first:
  • That foot becomes the only legal pivot foot.
• A progressing player who jumps off one foot on the first step may:
  • Land with both feet simultaneously for the second step.
  • In this case, no pivot is allowed, and the ball must be released before either foot returns to the floor.
