Up, Down, Rebound is a processing sequence used on jump shots, whether inside the 3-point arc or on the perimeter. It helps officials stay focused on the most important parts of a shot attempt from release to landing to the next play.

The sequence is:

  1. Up
  2. Down
  3. Rebound

This concept helps officials avoid staying locked on the shooter too long or moving to rebounding action too early. A legal contest is not just about the shot itself. Defenders must also allow the shooter to land safely.

Officiating focus:

Stay with the shooter long enough to judge both the upward motion and the landing. Only after that should your focus move to the rebound.
