Shelter-linked accounts can create pets with an In Shelter status and transfer those pets to new owners after adoption.

Once a pet transfer is initiated, the pet's status changes to In Transfer. The new owner receives an email asking them to confirm the transfer. To complete the process, the new owner must create or access their Findpet account and confirm the pet transfer.

If the new owner does not confirm the transfer, the pet remains listed as In Transfer until the owner confirms it or the shelter cancels the transfer. During this period, the new owner's contact information can be used as the primary contact for lost-and-found inquiries, while the shelter remains available as a backup contact.

To avoid a large number of pets remaining in In Transfer status, we recommend making transfer confirmation part of the adoption process. For example, you can initiate the transfer while adoption documents are being completed, verify the status before the pet leaves the shelter, or follow up with the new owner after adoption.

Requiring confirmation helps ensure that the new owner has access to the pet's Findpet profile and knows how to keep important information current, including contact details and pet photos used for identification.
