• Every player has the right to move freely anywhere within the playing court without being illegally restricted by an opponent.
  • Any illegal contact that restricts, displaces, or hinders a player’s ability to move should be ruled a foul.
  • Freedom of movement is most commonly affected during:
    • Rebounding situations
    • Post entry passes
    • Screening actions
    • Off-ball cuts
  • Officials should focus on:
    • Whether contact prevents a player from going where they are legally entitled to go
    • Whether an advantage or disadvantage is created
  • Physical play is allowed but illegal displacement and preventing freedom of movement is not.
