Hurricane & Storm Preparedness Guide
Most of the work that protects a building happens before landfall. Run this list when the season opens and again when a storm is named.
Before the storm: Staff
- Name the people, not the job titles: who calls the close, who puts up the shutters, who reports the claim, who talks to tenants, with a backup for each
- Build the tenant and occupant contact tree before the season and send one test message through it
- Walk every responder through the shut-offs for water, power and gas, and mark each one on a floor plan they can carry in a truck
- Put keys, access codes and after-hours entry notes with the people who respond after hours, not at the corporate office
- Post emergency contacts and our 24/7 dispatch line where staff can reach them without a login: [emergency number]
- Give tenants and occupants the plan early: shut-off basics, who to call, where to go
Before the storm: Surroundings
- Where it is safe to do so, clear roof drains, scuppers and gutters so water has somewhere to go
- Bring in or tie down anything on the site that can be picked up and thrown: signage, furniture, trash containers, pallets, ladders, unanchored equipment
- Cut back limbs that overhang the roof, the service entrance or the parking a tenant will leave a car in
- Protect the drainage side with backflow valves, installed by a licensed plumber. A sewer backup during a surge event is Category 3 water inside a building that never took an inch of surface flooding
Before the storm: Space
- Move critical contents to at least 1 foot above the Base Flood Elevation or the Design Flood Elevation, whichever is higher. The Base Flood Elevation for your address is on your community's flood map. Write it in the block below
