See which marketing actually pays off, by real cost per job

A RocketLevel tool, backed by decades of experience in the trade. Plenty of contractors guess which marketing pays off. Enter what you spent on each source and the jobs each one brought in, and see your real cost per job, your marketing as a share of revenue, and which channels actually earn their keep.

The read it gives: cost per job by source, total marketing spend as a percent of revenue, and a side-by-side of which channels return the most work for the money. Run it across your sources and the cheapest, busiest channels stop being a guess.

How the math works

<aside> ๐Ÿงฎ

The formula. This page carries the rules and the sheet does the arithmetic. If the two ever disagree, the page governs and the sheet gets corrected.

The one-line read on the sheet uses RocketLevel working thresholds, applied to overall ROI: below 0% means you spend more than you earn back, 0% up to but not including 100% reads working but thin, and 100% or higher reads strong. Exactly 0% reads thin; exactly 100% reads strong.

Count a job against a source only if you know where it came from. Jobs you cannot attribute belong in neither the numerator nor the denominator, because guessing the source is what makes a channel look cheap.

Worked example

<aside> ๐Ÿ“Š

Worked example. Three sources over a year, a $6,000 average job, 40% gross margin.

The referral line costs a quarter what paid search costs per job ($200 against $800) and returns five and a half times the ROI (1,100% against 200%). In RocketLevel's working experience that is the usual shape of it in restoration, and it argues for putting time into property manager relationships before you add paid spend.

Three ways to use this calculator

Before this tool can tell you anything, the attribution has to exist. Put a required source field on your intake form, so a job cannot be saved without one, and have whoever answers the phone fill it at first contact rather than reconstructing it later. Give it a fixed list of your actual sources plus "unknown," because a free-text box turns into fifty spellings of the same referral. Run this calculator once a quarter against that field.

Important: please read. This tool is provided free of charge by RocketLevel as a general, educational estimate and starting point only. Tools for this play

Open the spreadsheet for your own copy. Keep going: pair this with Know Your Numbers: Where Your Work Comes From and What It Costs to Get and The Restoration Marketing Channel Matrix: Where to Spend Your Time and Money. Template: Lead Source Scorecard and Contract Read scores each paid source before you renew it.

Do it yourself or have it done. The source field on your intake form and a quarterly run of this calculator are yours to set up, and they will tell you which channels earn their keep. If the answer is property manager and facility relationships, the next problem is making more of them, which takes steady outreach, the part that takes dedicated people to staff alongside the work. RocketLevel's inside sales team books those first meetings, so the channel that already pays best gets more at-bats.
