See what missed scope is costing you every year, and what lifting recovery to 90 percent is worth

A RocketLevel tool, backed by decades of experience in the trade. Warranted work slips through as missed scope on more jobs than plenty of owners think. Enter your numbers and see how much you're leaving on the table each year, and what lifting your supplement recovery toward the 90 percent target is worth in real gross profit. The target is yours to set. Read the note on where 90 came from before you treat it as gospel.

What it tells you

Seven numbers come back.

What you enter

<aside> ๐Ÿ“ฅ

What you enter. Six cells, plus the recovery target (90 percent unless you change it). Estimate honestly. A flattering input gives you a comfortable answer and no reason to change anything.

If you have never tracked the middle two, guess low for now, then track them for ninety days and rerun this. In our experience the real numbers come in worse than the guess.

Track it in the job file, one line per closed job: original approved estimate, supplement filed, supplement approved, and who filed it. Ninety days of that turns the middle two inputs from guesses into measurements, and it also tells you whether the problem is scope nobody spotted or scope nobody wrote up.

Where the 90 percent comes from

<aside> ๐Ÿ“Œ

Where the 90 percent comes from. It is the recovery rate this tool models against. It is not an industry benchmark and we are not going to present it as one. We went looking for a published, sourced figure on supplement recovery rates, from the trade associations and from the claims data vendors, and did not find one solid enough to stand on.

Treat 90 percent as an aggressive but reachable goal for a shop with disciplined field documentation and a person who owns supplements. If your own goal is 70, or 95, put that in instead. What the tool is really measuring is the distance between where your recovery sits today and where you have decided it should sit, and every dollar figure on the page moves with that gap.

Worked example

<aside> ๐Ÿ“Š

Worked example. 20 jobs a month, an $8,000 average estimate, 35% of jobs carrying missed scope, 8% of the estimate missed on those jobs, 40% recovered today, 45% gross margin.

That $12,096 is gross profit, before overhead, on work you already sold and already performed. Nobody had to go win it. It was sitting in the file waiting to be documented.

Three ways to use this calculator

<aside> โ†”๏ธ

This calculator covers dollars you recover after the estimate is approved, the supplements you capture when hidden damage or extra scope appears once work is underway. The deductible you never collect and the scope you under-write at the very start belong in the Deductible and Scope Leak Calculator: What Are Your Two Cash Leaks Costing You?. Count those upfront leaks there, not here, so you don't enter the same missed-scope dollars twice.

Do it yourself or have it done. Supplement recovery is your work and stays with you: the job-file log, the field documentation and the person who owns supplements are what move the number this calculator shows. RocketLevel does not write or file supplements. Our part is upstream, where an inside sales team books meetings with property managers and facility directors so more of the work you document well is direct commercial work.
