Each band has a short list of what has to be true before the next one. Your working band is the first band with two or more gates that are not true yet. A single open gate in a lower band does not move you down. It shows up as a fix-first item, and you close it before the three gates you pick for the quarter. That rule, the gates and the dollar breakpoints are RocketLevel's working view of how restoration companies change as they grow, not a published standard.
Here is how that plays out. A $7M shop ticks every Band 1 gate, but nobody besides the owner works receivables and nobody besides the owner can write an estimate. That is two open Band 2 gates, so its working band is Band 2. Revenue puts it in Band 3, but it runs like a Band 2 shop, so it works Band 2 first. The fix is a person who works accounts receivable (AR) on a set day, plus a second estimator. Another rep would not help yet. If receivables were the only open gate, the shop would work Band 3, with AR at the top of its fix-first list.
A shop can also run ahead of its revenue. If a $4M company already clears every Band 1 and Band 2 gate, its systems are built for more work than it has. That is room to grow into, and the next gates to work are Band 3's.
